Sedona City Council unanimously approved a $248,025 agreement with Musco Sports Lighting, LLC on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to purchase four LED lighting poles for the Multi-Use Field at Posse Grounds Park.
The new lighting is scheduled to be installed in mid to late November once American Youth Soccer Organization’s season is complete according to Parks & Recreation Manager Josh Frewin.
The purchase drew praise from members of the Sedona Ultimate Frisbee group, who attended the meeting to voice their support.
The new lights are dark sky-compliant and have some energy savings as well “almost no visible light outside of the playing surface it illuminates,” Frewin said.
Some $150,000 has been allocated among several projects, approved by council in the FY26 budget.
More Parking
Public Works will add 20 new parking spaces at the corner of Caruth Drive and Posse Ground Road, catercorner to West Sedona School’s entrance, while preserving all existing trees on the site.
The spaces will be built with a 2- to 6-inch red rock base topped with a 1-inch layer of landscape stone and the driveway will be surfaced with asphalt millings. Work on this project is underway and is anticipated to be completed within the next few months.
“In Posse Grounds, we need as much parking as we can possibly get, so we’re excited to do that,” Frewin said. “It’s all using the recycled materials that we have from the rock yard that project will add about 20 parking spaces. It’s not going to be a huge space, but it’s something.”
Pavilion Seating
The Posse Grounds Pavilion will have another row of gabion baskets installed at the rear of the audience’s viewing area with concrete tops installed to provide additional seating with additional landscaping improvements.
Work on this will commence after the September Red Dirt Concert Series concludes on Friday, Sept. 26, with the special 3.5-hour free show of the Longtime Locals Showcase.
Ramadas
Painting and remodeling three ramadas at Posse Grounds Park, the work will Include chip sealing the walkways, painting, wood repair and new roofing.
“We’re working on adding [Americans with Disabilities Act] access to the softball field,” Frewin said. “Currently, to get to that softball field, it’s downstairs on each of the dugouts, so we need to make one of those ADA accessible.”
The city allocated $35,800 for materials and the installation of two 10-foot by 300-foot cantilever shade structures over the pickleball court’s seating area. Another shade structure over Ranger Station Park’s playground is scheduled according to Frewin; however the department is currently getting quotes.
Some $32,000 for the painting the Sedona Posse Grounds Hub and Jack Malmgren Memorial Skate Park was initially planned for Fiscal Year 26, however the project was completed in Fiscal Year 25 with remaining funds from other capital improvement projects.
“We’re doing some new park signage and park maps throughout,” Frewin said. “The park signage that’s up currently doesn’t have the disc golf course or the bocce, pickleball. So we’re working on the design for those new maps and almost have that wrapped up.”
New security cameras have also been installed around the pavilion, hub and Sedona Community Pool.
“There have been a few instances where the doors on that back end of the storage closet [at the pavilion] have been kicked in and a few things taken or spray-painted on the back side,” Frewin said. “It’s more just trying to keep people away from that area behind the pavilion.”
Finally as of Aug. 23 the Yappy Hour program that takes place on Saturdays and Sundays for off leash dog socialization has moved to the grass field west of the Dr. Nancy Alexander Administration Building at 221 Brewer Road, across the street from Ranger Station Park.
From April through October, Yappy Hour sessions run from 8 to 9 a.m., and from November through March, they are held from 9 to 10 a.m.
An hour prior to Yappy Hour a local greyhound group also is using the space.
