Start off the new year in the parks with a free First Day Hike that sets the tone for the rest of 2026. Arizona State Parks and Trails will offer all First Day Hikes with no fee to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Diverse and exciting hikes at parks around the state will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 1. Through this national effort, park rangers, naturalists and volunteers will guide you along trails in 18 parks from Flagstaff to Safford. Hikes vary from strenuous adventures to the top of Picacho Peak to leisurely boat rides at Patagonia Lake. All participants receive waived admission fees at each park and are encouraged to share their adventures on social media with hashtag #FirstDayHikes.

This is the first event to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial, and Arizona is reflecting on the legacy of Teddy Roosevelt, who was a key figure in creating national parks. He believed in protecting America’s natural beauty for future generations, a vision that helped shape parks across the country, including the ones you will explore in the hikes held on Jan. 1. Arizona will be participating in Trails250, a collective effort to celebrate our nation’s anniversary by getting outdoors and experiencing the diversity and wonder of the Grand Canyon State. First Day Hikes are the first Trails250 event you can enjoy.

These hikes help ring in the New Year and connect individuals and families to nature, fostering physical and mental well-being and shared stewardship of our natural, cultural and recreational resources. A full listing of First Day Hikes with locations, maps, a description and tips can be found at AZStateParks.com/fdh.

Keep checking the website for updates or changes due to weather. Please note that some hikes require reservations and some don’t allow dogs.
