The Sedona Red Rock High School Scorpions football’s final home game of the season is this Friday, Oct. 10, with the Scorpion Booster Club’s tailgate taking place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff against the Joseph City Wildcats. The game is also Sedona Red Rock High School’s Homecoming game and serves as the cap to a week of similar themes and senior nights across the school’s sports programs.
Numerous events’ this weekend across Sedona and the Verde Valley have been preemptively canceled as Tropical Storm Priscilla goes through Arizona, however Athletic Director Peter Brock said that school administration is monitoring the weather.
“This may change so I encourage our fans to check our Facebook page for updates,” he wrote.
“The theme is Hawaiian BBQ, and your Scorpion Booster Club will be giving out free Hawaiian leis and a themed photo opportunity to remember the event,” the Booster Club wrote on its website. “Socialize with fellow students, fans and community members and get hyped up to cheer on your Scorpions Football Team … [with] entertaining performances by our Cheer Squad.”
The Scorpions are entering Homecoming seeking their first win this season and are coming off a 58-6 loss to Mogollon High School on Friday, Oct. 3; the Wildcats are 3-3 so far this season.
Mogollon High School “was excellent, showed great sportsmanship and were fun to go against,” Head Coach Tony Hauserman said. “They were more experienced, with about 40 players, so we were overmatched. Our kids hung in, fought hard and, despite a few injuries that left us with just eight players, they rose to the occasion. They showed incredible bravery and fortitude, and I’m proud of how they carried themselves, even with the lopsided score.”
For Homecoming, Sedona Fire District Chief Ed Mezulis will serve as the judge of the car decorating contest. The contest will have two categories: SRRHS seniors and members of the community competing alongside the members of the lowerclassmen to see who decorates their ride the best using the two themes of Scorpion pride and Hawaiian flair. The car judging starts at 5:30 and the winners will be announced at 6 p.m. and will be awarded Scorpion apparel.
Joining the car decorating contest is free but it is limited to the number of available parking spaces in the tailgate area, people can register in advance to reserve a parking space on the Booster’s website or can show up that afternoon for first come first serve spaces.
At halftime, the Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned. Football team seniors, Omar Martinez, Steel Sturgeon and Vincent Smith, will be honored after the game.
“The big theme this year is to make sure that we send off our seniors in style,” Brock said. “They’re the ones who were the core group for a leadership group of this football team getting started once again, especially Steel and Vincent, the two of them have been great advocates of the team and supporters of their teammates. … Without the two of them, it would be hard to imagine this coming together.”
“These are three great kids, and I’m really glad we were able to have a varsity football team this year so they could play,” Hauserman said. “Steel and Vincent have wanted to play football their entire time in high school, and I’m really happy we could give them that opportunity.”
Food trucks will be serving up Mexican food alongside the Boosters who will be fundraising by selling barbecue pulled pork sliders and snow cones and the Scorpion Snack Shack will be open.
SRRHS Student Council will be operating free carnival games and face painting will be available for a small donation.
Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for students or $20 for the Scorpion Pride T-shirt available for purchase at the front office of SRRHS that grants the wearer admission to all home games for the school year.
Also in 2026 the booster club’s Casino Night will return after a hiatus on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Sedona Performing Arts Center.
At Casino Night “we’ll have babysitting available, and casino games, food and beverages and it’s a big opportunity to socialize,” Scorpion Booster Club President Matt Corney said. “Come together as a community and help raise funds for our school.”
