The city of Sedona Parks and Recreation Department’s adult softball league will start its season on Thursday, June 12, and will play three games every Thursday night from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

“We’re a really grassroots league,” Athletics and Aquatics Supervisor Carmen Brashier said. “There’s a little bit of competition, but it’s definitely Parks and Rec-based. You can’t take competition out of sports, but it’s not that intense we-have-to-win mentality. Whenever I’m out there, everyone’s just glad to be playing together and having fun on Thursday nights.”

Each team will play eight regular-season games before advancing to either a single or double elimination tournament, depending on the number of teams. Four teams are registered, the Dirty Rats, Quit Pitching, Sedona Jeep Tours and Sun Catchers, and Brashier said that she planned to implement a double elimination format to maximize play time. Last year’s championship was won by Rokzoo.

“The Dirty Rats and Sedona Jeep Tours are usually top-performing teams,” Brashier noted. “I don’t think Rokzoo is returning this year, but those three have historically been strong. Sedona Jeep Tours is our longstanding team, put together by Pedro Ortega. It’s usually a mix of locals, longtime residents and some recent high school grads.”

“We’ve had two different teams win the championship, so what I love about this league is how competitive it is,” Umpire Jason Metzger said about Rokzoo’s win in 2024, following A Day in the West’s victory in 2023.” “And getting to see dads and kids play together is pretty cool as well … And women shouldn’t feel intimidated to get out there because it’s a co-ed league. Seeing a lot of the women who are excellent players and having success has been a highlight as well for me.”

Brashier said that parking can be limited on game nights and suggested spectators and players park at the Hub, the rec room on the west side of the park or in the West Sedona School parking lot. The concession stand will not be staffed and pets must be kept on leashes.

The game schedule will be posted on the department’s website later in the week.

“We’re all set on volunteers and staff,” Brashier said. “A lot of my lifeguards like to pick up a few extra hours, so they rotate in as scorekeepers. We’ve also got Jason and Justin returning as umpires, and our maintenance crew does a great job on Thursdays making sure the bases are set and the field is lined and ready for play.”

Anyone interested in joining a team this season can contact Brashier at (928) 282-7098 or cbrashier@sedonaaz.gov. Teams can add players to their roster up to a maximum of 24 until the postseason begins, typically at the end of August.
