Pocket Fire burning 500 acres 7 miles north of Sedona; Oak Creek Canyon evacuated

A vegetation fire, dubbed the Pocket Fire, is burning about 7 mlles north of Sedona in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness area. As of 9 p.m., Friday, June 19, it is 500 acres in size.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office first conducted evacuation of West Fork Trailhead area along FR 231 and along Oak Creek Canyon around 5:30 p.m.

“The Coconino National Forest has air resources over the fire,” Sedona Fire District said around 5:30 p.m. USFS crews were en route.

The “Ready, Set Go!” evacuation system has set a Go – Level 3 – Evacuation Order for ALL visitors and residents in Oak Creek Canyon between Sedona and Forest Highlands. This includes dispersed camping around West Fork and nearby areas above the Mogollon Rim.

State Route 89A northbound at Owenby Way is closed by Sedona police while State Route 89A southbound at Forest Highlands is closed by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

At 7:12 p.m., Friday, June 19, Echo Project Manager Zackery Pressley wrote that evacuations have been ordered due to the Pocket Fire, a then-100-acre wildfire. State Route 89A is closed between Fort Tuthill and the north end of Sedona.
Forest visitors in the Oak Creek Canyon area, as well as visitors to End/Edge of the World are asked to evacuate. This includes the Evacuation Zones 14 and 15 in Oak Creek Canyon, located in Coconino County.
Travel down Woody Mountain Road (Forest Road 231) is not advised at this time.
Resources assigned to the fire include two Hotshot crews, one dozer, five engines and miscellaneous overhead aircraft and drones, with more en route.
Firefighters are responding with a direct extinguishment and full suppression strategy.

The American Red Cross is opening an evacuation shelter at Sedona Red Rock High School, 995 Upper Red Rock Loop Road.

American Red Cross volunteers are on the way, and the shelter is expected to open at 10 p.m. for those impacted by evacuations.
