Goldenstein offers groundbreaking new artwork5 min read

In many ways, gallery owner Linda Goldenstein is a maverick with a vision. Once dubbed the “art maven of Sedona” by Arizona Republic art critic John Villoni, she has taken the traditional gallery model and turned it on its head.

he groundbreaking results are visible throughout Sedona with art exhibits citywide at Goldenstein Gallery, Chapel of the Holy Cross, City Hall, its expanded Art Exhibitions and Artist-in-Residence program in partnership with L’Auberge de Sedona and numerous events that include Peace Meditations, Artist Coffee Talks and more. The gallery is located at 150 SR 179.

In April, Goldenstein Gallery is also exhibiting rare and historic Marilyn Monroe color positive and negative large-format color separations of her famous Red Velvet photoshoot and Golden Dreams calendar at the Lexington Hotel, New York City, in the Norma Jeane Penthouse Suite where Monroe lived with Joe DiMaggio. This exhibit will run through Sunday, April 7, and is open daily by appointment.

Throughout its 18-year history, the Goldenstein Gallery has consistently championed opportunities to create a life-enhancing experience … bringing artist and collector together.

To Goldenstein, the spirit of collaboration connects everything from the experience that artists and collectors have to the gallery’s reach throughout Sedona.

Although it has worked with hundreds of artists, including respected museums, national and community exhibitions, the gallery now focuses on 40 fine local and regional artists. Named Best Gallery in Sedona for a record 11 years running and for five years chosen Best Gallery by Market Surveys of America, USA Today’s 10 Best named it the No. 1 place to shop in Sedona.

This season in Sedona, it has planned a series of celebrations to commemorate its 18th year in business, offered in gratitude for the support it has received over the years.

April brings its new highly anticipated show: Western Perspectives. Encapsulating the pioneering spirit and diversity of artists living and creating in the West, this exhibit enthralls the viewer with the work of artists that are deeply rooted in tradition yet flourishing with new styles — portraying the imaginations of today. The diversity and quality of this unparalleled celebration of art is inspiring to everyone and includes paintings, sculpture, fine art furniture and jewelry. The featured artists offer a broad range of stylistic interpretations.

Among the many stars of this show are contemporary American Indian and Western artists such as David DeVary, known for his “Cowboys & Cowgirls with Attitude”; Ben Wright and his bold multi-layered paintings; Carla Romero with paintings inspired by her great-grandmother’s heritage of Acoma Pueblo; Upton Ethelbah “Greyshoes,” named 2009 Living Treasure by the Museum of Native American Arts and Culture and multi-winner in sculpture at Santa Fe Indian Market; Ray Tigerman’s impressionist depictions of Western figures and Cheston Trammel’s reclaimed metal bells and fine wood furniture.

Bronze works by allegorical sculptor James Muir will be featured as the one-year anniversary of the installation of the 33-foot-tall monumental and iconic Christ of the Holy Cross sculpture is celebrated. The maquette sculpture of this touching piece is available at Goldenstein Gallery. The story of the chapel, Muir and these pieces were recently featured in “Resurrecting the Chapel,” a documentary short that aired at the Sedona International Film Festival.
