The Sedona Red Rock High School golf team, No. 9 in Division III of the Arizona Interscholastic Association, finished its regular season with another win at a four-way match, played at Elephant Rocks Golf Course in Williams on Tuesday, May 2.
Against Northland Preparatory Academy, Kingman Academy High School and Williams High School, the Scorpions came out on top with a 21-over 165 total in the nine-hole round.
“It was a beautiful day, great conditions for golf,” Scorpions coach Mike Webster said. “Everyone played pretty decently.”
Elephant Rocks presented a different type of challenge to the golfers due to its narrow fairways surrounded by woods. The team is used to playing on courses with a more desert-type design, and with wider fairways.
Junior Seth Farmer, the division’s individual No. 9, tied for first place on the day with senior teammate Neil Smith and Northland Prep junior Vincent Cortese at a 4-over 40. Cortese is ranked No. 8 in the division.
According to Webster it was an irregular round for both Farmer and Smith, due to having off days putting.
Red Rock junior Julian Travaglia finished at 6-over 42, senior Daniel Bouvin 7-over 43 and senior Olivia Webster 11-over 47. It was a season low for Webster.
The Spartans, the No. 5-ranked team and Division III Section V champion, finished with a team total of 32. The top four individual scores are used to calculate final team scores.
The Scorpions are 4-1 against the Spartans this season, but due to scores in other matches Northland Prep finds itself ranked higher.
“We’re looking forward to going to state and beating them there,” Mike Webster said.
Webster said that he thought Farmer has had his mind set on the state tournament, thus the performance at Elephant Rocks.
“He’s a junior so he really wants to go low,” Webster said. “Neil [Smith] wants a good showing in his last performance.
“Julian [Travaglia] should be good, he’s got his swing down now. As long as he stays out of the woods.”
Bouvin can crush the ball off the tee, and Olivia Webster hopes to finish out the season with a career-low.
“If [Bouvin’s] driver works right, and his chipping and putting is better he should be in the low 80s,” Mike Webster said. “Olivia, it’s her senior year, so we’re hoping she can get a few shots off her average and get into the high 80s.”
The state tournament will be played on Thursday and Friday, May 11 and 12, at Randolph Golf Course in Tucson.
