City officials to update sign code2 min read

The city of Sedona will review its sign code.

Did you know that Sedona is home to the only McDonald’s in the world whose golden arches are teal?

That wasn’t because of a publicity stunt or the contractor running out of yellow paint when it was built nearly 25 years ago. It was because of city code.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Sedona City Council has requested staff to conduct a comprehensive overhaul of the city’s sign code.

“It’s definitely time that it’s revisited but overall it’s still a good ordinance,” Community Development Director Audree Juhlin said. “It’s been used a model for several other cities across the country.”

The sign code, which is part of the larger land development code, is one of the council’s priorities this year. Juhlin said the revised code is expected to be presented to council early next year. It will go through a public input process and then go before the Sedona Planning and Zoning Commission before going back to council for a final vote. That process will take about six months to complete.

Juhlin said two of the biggest issues being addressed by staff are the number of signs per business as well as the background color of these signs. She said one local business has drawn a lot of attention since opening because of its bright yellow and blue sign, which she said meets current code.

“Some parts of the code lack clarity,” she said. “We’re hoping to help reduce the subjectivity that’s there now. Of all the issues in Sedona, signs are by far the biggest thing we get complaints about.”
