We’re improving sports coverage on website2 min read

At Larson Newspapers, we’ve accomplished so much in the sports department since the day I was hired in April 2007.

The monthly column From the Cheap Seats, along with Athlete Q&A, a fun column for high school athletes to reveal who they are every Friday in the Sedona Red Rock News during the school year, are just two of the elements introduced during my time here.

Full color pages of Little League previews, new community pools and new football fields have made it to print.

A football preview page in the fall of 2009 won our newsroom an award in the Arizona Newspapers Association 2010 Better Newspaper Contest for best feature photo layout.

There are many elements to the sports page these days in the Sedona Red Rock News, and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Sports fans in Sedona are invited to view our new sports tab options such as sports reporter bio, sports news and the column, From the Cheap Seats. We will add a schedules and rosters link by August when high school sports begin.

Our next big project, I believe, will put us over the top. As of June 27, we added a few new options for sports fans who look to not only the printed paper, but the Internet for information on our sports teams.

In the past, readers could view one or two stories a week about their favorite sports teams. Now, readers will be able to feed their sports addiction with new options such as schedules and rosters.

The project is ongoing, and thanks to our production team, it’s going to be a good one.

By the fall, readers will have access to schedules and rosters for Sedona Red Rock High School, West Sedona School and Big Park Community School. If it’s successful enough, we’ll add other sports to it like the Sedona Swim Team, community softball leagues, youth football or even Little League.

Viewers can access these links by holding the arrow icon over the sports tab at www.redrocknews.com. A drop-down box will appear and the different links will be presented.

Want to know when the Scorpion volleyball team is hosting its rival? How about when the next track and field meet is, or when and where the next home boys basketball game will be? It will all be there.

The biggest complaint I’ve had during my four-plus years here is the lack of printed, consistent schedules. Printing the schedule with our individual season previews isn’t enough because it constantly changes. Well, we hope this fixes things.

So enjoy, and don’t forget to comment on a story, or send me an email if you have more ideas or just want to say hello.{jcomments on}
