After nine firefighters died in a structure fire in Charleston, S.C., the city released safety recommendations to prevent another tragedy.

According to Sedona Fire District Fire Chief Matt Shobert, SFD is in line with the directive.

Firefighter safety starts at the most basic element of each firefighter looking out for him or herself, Shobert said. From there it expands to ensuring crew, district and ultimately community safety.

“They need to take some personal accountability for themselves,” Shobert said.

From the personal level, SFD helps firefighters improve safety practices through training while trying to keep things balanced.

According to Shobert, it’s his job as fire chief to protect firefighters — which is the district’s No. 1 priority — and serve the community while balancing the tax burden.

“It’s not cheap to be good and safe,” Shobert said. “It’s an investment.”
