The Sedona Juniors baseball team got its revenge June 13, beating the Camp Verde Rangers 17-8 on their home field.

The win is now the fourth in a row for the Sedona team.

“I look for good things in the future for this team. We are beginning to come together as a team, and we are doing it by playing the right way,” Sedona Manager Rob Henry said.

Sedona, 13-1, lost to the Rangers two weeks ago in Camp Verde, their only loss of the season so far.

With the mid-afternoon Arizona sun pounding on their backs, Sedona was ready to play some baseball.

In the first inning, starting pitcher Tanner Rezzonico for the Rangers toed the mound, looking to shut down the high-powered Sedona offense.

Rezzonico was a main reason why the Rangers won last time, but this time the Sedona team was ready for him.

Sedona’s Blake Baker would score the first run of the game without a hit being recorded in the inning.

“Blake [Baker] has begun to take a leadership role for our ballclub,” Henry said.

Baker reached on an error and stole second base. Two players then walked to load the bases. Baker walked home on a wild pitch by Rezzonico.

Sedona up, 1-0.

Baker was 2-3 with three runs scored, two walks and a run batted in.

“I try to work as hard as I can. I’m getting pretty comfortable leading off the ball game,” Baker said.

In the bottom of the first inning, starting pitcher J.R. Henry took the mound for Sedona.

He seemed to have control problems early as well, as he gave up three base hits, but he recovered by only giving up one run as the Rangers would tie the score at 1-1 after one inning of play.

The key hit came with two outs, and the Rangers’ Andrew Minner doubled to score Curtis Hawk.

The top of the second inning would bring a New York Yankees style of play, as Sedona would put up a six-spot on the Rangers.

Patience was the key in this inning for Sedona, as the team took six walks and recorded three base hits to make the score 7-1, advantage Sedona.

Bradley Cox would get a base hit that scored Ari Aranda, and Henry would get a single, knocking in Cox and Tyler Hollmann.

Rezzonico was pulled by his manager, Chet Teague, in the top of the second inning, but it didn’t seem to matter who he put in the game for the Rangers. The Sedona offense was on fire.

Sedona would put up one run in the top of the third, six in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to take a 17-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Rangers actually mounted a small comeback in the bottom of the fifth, as they scored four runs, making the score 17-8.

Henry began to tire in the inning, as he had trouble locating and walked three batters.

But his manager let him work through it because of the big lead. The move paid off as he struck out Clarence Romero to end the inning.

“J.R. [Henry] mixed his pitches well, and he fought through it,” Rob Henry said.

J.R. Henry pitched five innings, allowing seven walks, eight runs and striking out four.

J.R. Henry also did it with the bat as he was 2-4 with two runs scored and five runs batted in.

Sedona would not score in the top of the sixth inning, but Kyl Chartier pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth to slam the door on the Rangers.
