Sedona Red Rock High School is looking for soccer referees to officiate its co-ed soccer program and softball umpires, both sports pay $40 per game to officiate and both sports typically have one home game a week that runs about 80 minutes.

“Our middle school and high school have really excelled in soccer recently, and it’s a good way to help these kids foster their athletic career,” Athletic Director Peter Brock said. “We’ve got a lot of kids interested in playing sports like soccer, and if you’re not the type of person that’s interested in coaching because of the time demand, this is a different way that you could still have a serious impact on these kids in general.”

Brock said he does not anticipate needing to fill any coaching positions for the spring, following the resignation of Deb Miller as the softball coach, who will likely be replaced by an internal candidate in the coming weeks.

“We had an enormous number of kids come and try out this year,” for the co-ed soccer team, Brock said. “I was so proud to see those kids were going out there working to see if they can earn a spot on the team. We had 52 kids try out. So it was fantastic. Right now we’re going to plan to move forward with 22 [on the team].”

There’s no uniform allowance or equipment allowance at this time, he said.

“For softball, it would be great to have someone with some experience,” Brock said. “Either with slow pitch softball, fast pitch softball, even a baseball background and any of those is great experience. … They’ll need to come with their own protective equipment, including their own mask. They’re going to be behind the plate, shin protectors, chest protectors, things like that.”

For soccer, the school can provide a uniform shirt but they’ll need to bring their own whistle.

Both sports get underway during the first week of March and softball ends in mid April and soccer ends toward the end of April.

People interested in officiating can contact Brock at (928) 204-6700 or by emailing brock@sedonak12.org before the start of the season.
