Superior Court warns of a new phone scam2 min read

Scammers regularly target seniors with fraud schemes via email and the internet and by phone. Some claim to be grandchildren begging for bail money while others demand gift cards or bank transfers from victims. Photo illustration by Daulton Venglar/Larson Newspapers

The Superior Court in Coconino County has recently received several calls from concerned resiĀdents regarding a phone scam. The caller identifies themselves as an employee of the Coconino County Detention Facility, stating that they have received a Superior Court order from a specific judge, and to resolve this issue, they request personal or financial information or payments. This person uses threatĀening language and informs residents that a warrant could be issued for their arrest.

Please know that employees of the Coconino County Detention Facility and court staff will not threaten or use aggression when contacting residents.

They will not ask for personal or financial inforĀmation or payments. Correspondence by the Court is mailed through the U.S. Postal Service directly to residents’ addresses.

Reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a scam by following these crime prevention tips from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office:

Always be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, texts or emails.

Be cautious of mimicked telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Even if the information displayed on the caller ID appears the same as a law enforceĀment or government agency, hang up and call the agency directly to verify the caller’s legitimacy.

ā–  Never use a phone number provided to you by the caller to verify their credibility.

ā–  Never give money or personal information to someone with whom you don’t have ties and did not initiate contact.

ā–  Take your time and trust your instincts. If an unknown caller makes you uncomfortable or says things that don’t sound right, hang up.

If you believe you have been contacted by an individual claiming to be an employee of the Court or detention staff, who asked for personal or finanĀcial information or payments, call Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at (928) 774-4523 or your local law enforcement agency.
