Jessica Cox — the world’s first licensed pilot born without arms — was the keynote speaker at the monthly meeting of the Sedona 99s, the local chapter of the International Organization of Women Pilots. She shared her journey and demonstrated how she puts on her headset, ties her shoes and even signs books — all with her feet.
Cox leads an exceptionally full and active life. Cox flies her Ercoupe airplane, drives a car, is happily married and holds a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo. She regularly accomplishes feats many would consider extraordinary.
Cox is the author of “Disarm Your Limits,” an autobiographical self-help book that has sold more than 10,000 copies, and she writes a monthly column for Flying magazine.
When she’s not in the air, Cox devotes her time to empowering people around the globe who are considered disabled. Her mission is simple and powerful: To inspire families, communities and employers to recognize that “disability doesn’t mean inability.” As she likes to remind audiences, “you don’t need arms to lift people up.”
Cox is currently building a new airplane engineered for flight using two limbs, which she plans to fly around the world to showcase what people with disabilities can do — not what they can’t. Visit her website at Rightfooted.org to learn more.
