Area golf courses have restrictions but remain open amid outbreak2 min read

A number of precautions are being taken at area golf courses to ensure the safety of employees and customers alike. Still, venues like Sedona Golf Resort, seen above, and other local courses are remaining open amid the coronavirus outbreak. Gov. Ducey stated on March 24 that golf courses could remain open. Whether you’re a long-time golfer or someone interested in learning the game, the outbreak of COVID-19 doesn’t mean that you can’t get out to the course.

All four of Sedona’s golf courses are open. Seven Canyons Country Club is running a “Member for a Day” promotion through Sunday, May 31. The other courses — Canyon Mesa Country Club, Sedona Golf Resort, Oakcreek Country Club — are all open as well.

“Golf is a great way to be in the fresh air,” Heather Risk, head golf professional at OCC, said. “We’re just trying to keep ‘behind the scenes’ safe, too. Safe for our members, guests and also for our employees.”

To that end, the courses have instituted a number of policies as a way to further prevent the outbreak. With that, long-time golfers will no doubt notice some breaks from normal golf customs.

While the courses are open, social distancing remains important. To promote that, a number of restrictions have been put in place. These include longer tee time intervals as a way to keep distance between groups, one person per golf cart as opposed to the normal two [unless the two people live together], not pairing groups of less than four together in the same tee time, no shotgun starts, no congregating after play, no posting scores in the golf shop after the round, limiting the restaurant to take-out only and closing the driving range.

Additional sanitary measures include using pool noodles in the cups to keep people from reaching in to get their golf balls, no touching of the flag sticks, no water jugs on the course, no rakes in the bunkers, no towels on the ball washers — William Darke, the head pro at Canyon Mesa, noted that they’re “basically telling golfers to not wash their balls” — sanitizing golf carts before use, throwing scorecards and pencils away after being used, limiting transactions to credit cards only and sanitizing the golf shop every hour.

Darke also said that Gov. Doug Ducey sent a statement out on Tuesday, March 24 confirming that golf courses can remain open.

It’s additionally worth noting that given the fluidity of the COVID-19 situation, further restrictions could come at later dates.

To inquire about golf as well as to get the most up-to-date information, prospective golfers are encouraged to contact the different courses.
