Slapnut Magoo and Rokzoo advance to playoff showdown3 min read

The playoffs for the city of Sedona’s 2019 Adult Summer League Softball season started with a bang on Thursday night.
No. 2 Pago’s and No. 3 Slapnut Magoos each won their first games to set up a quarterfinal matchup against each other.

Pago’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four, but Slapnut Magoos scored three in the top of the fifth to tie it.
The game remained even until the top of the seventh when, after benefiting from a disputed call at second base, Slapnut Magoos scored the go-ahead run. Pago’s threatened in the bottom of the inning but couldn’t score and Slapnut Magoos won 4-3.

“Nothing was really said,” Kayla Harkey of Slapnut Magoos said of her team falling behind early. “We just said that we needed to hit the ball and we did. We did well considering we only had nine people.”  Pago’s now moves to the Loser’s Bracket where they’ll take on the Dirty Rats, who fell to 16-6 to A Day in the West in the opener. Those two will square off at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Awaiting Slapnut Magoos in the Winner’s Bracket semifinal is Rokzoo, the league’s top seed who finished the regular season undefeated. They received a bye to the quarterfinals where they matched up with No. 4 A Day in the West, who earned their spot with a 16-6 win over the Dirty Rats.  While Rokzoo maintained a perfect season, it was not easy. A potential upset seemed to be brewing after A Day in the West plated five in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Rokzoo immediately dented that lead with a four-run second of their own. The following inning, they scored three more to take a 7-5 lead and eventually won 9-7.

“They’re not an easy team to beat,” Rokzoo coach Marty White said. “That [falling behind 5-0] really gets the blood stirring up. It depends what you do from there, whether you’re going to be negative or positive. This team takes that, runs with it, and gets a win out of it.”
Slapnut Magoos and Rokzoo will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The winner will have a spot in the final on Aug. 15 as the Winner’s Bracket champion.

A Day in the West moves to the Loser’s Bracket, where they’ll take on the Red Mountaineers at 6:15 p.m. Red Mountaineers fell 11-6 to Slapnut Magoos in Thursday’s Opener but bounced back to beat Red Rocks Rotary in the first Loser’s Bracket game.

The winners of the Red Mountaineers vs. A Day in the West and Dirty Rats vs. Pagos games will play each other at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of that game will take on the Slapnut Magoos vs. Rokzoo loser in the Loser’s Bracket final at 8:45 p.m. That winner will square off against the Slapnut Magoos
