In his second meet back from a hamstring injury, Sedona Red Rock High School senior Joe Glomski became the No. 1 long jumper in Arizona across all divisions at the Mingus Invitational on Friday, April 7, at Mingus Union High School.

Glomski jumped 23-09.75, which according to him is still a half inch short of the school record. The distance also ties him for 16th best in the entire United States.

“It’s awesome, it was amazing,” Glomski said. “I feel like I can jump even farther if I land better. I feel like I can still improve a lot.”

He attributed the leap, a personal best by 10 inches, to experimenting with a different approach that turned out to work much better than he had imagined. But he said he can go even farther if he gets his landing better.

Glomski also won the triple jump with a distance of 44-02.50, good for 10th best in all of Arizona. But he was not the only successful Scorpion on the day.

For the girls, senior Hannah Ringel continued her dominance of the throwing events. Ringel was again a double winner, taking the shot put in a personal best and school record 41-03.25 and the discus with a throw of 114-11.

With a lack of close competition, Ringel finds other ways to motivate herself.

“I saw someone threw 40-09, and at 40-10 I didn’t want to be that close in the state rankings,” Ringel said. “That was my main motivator.”

The two-time defending shot put state champion currently owns the No. 1 spot in Division IV in both events, holding an almost seven-foot advantage in the shot put and at 12.5 foot lead in the discus.

Ringel is second only to Division I Mountain Pointe High School senior Kayleigh Conlon [46-09] in all of Arizona in the shot put.

Junior Javi Pacheco took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.22 seconds and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.06 seconds, good for a provisional qualifying standard to the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV state meet.
He was also fifth in the long jump, going 19-06.50, just behind fourth-place senior Dawson Stevenson, who jumped 20-02. Both of those marks are state automatic qualifying distances.

Stevenson also tied for first in the high jump, successfully getting over the 5-10 mark.

Junior Nathan Hoyer won the 800-meter run in 2:07.99, a provisional time and a personal best by almost two seconds.

“I feel like the training I’ve been doing helped me a lot,” Hoyer said. “More training, harder training at practice keeps it consistent. My teammates push me.”

In the throwing events, senior Justin Aleman was second in the shot put with toss of 42-00.75. Fellow senior Chas Rescigno was third in the discus at 119-11 while 12th-grader Jake Christenson was fifth at 111-08.50.

Freshman Jacki King continued a strong start to her high school career, taking third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.74 seconds and second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 17.42. King tied for third in the high jump, getting over the 4-06 mark.

King has the ninth best 200 time and is tied for fifth best in the 100 hurdles.

Sophomore Abigail Stevenson was fifth in the 100 at 14.28 and fifth in the long jump at 15-01. King, Stevenson, junior Collier Trcic and freshman Naomi Thomson took third in the 4×100-meter relay in a state automatic time of 54.11.

Senior Sophia Perry was fourth in the long jump, reaching 15-03, and finished second in the triple jump at 32-07.75. Trcic was third in the triple with a jump of 31-11.

Junior Julia Koss is No. 3 in the pole vault with a season-high 10-00. Koss said that her goal is reach 11 feet.
