Scorpions build momentum at Hoops Classic1 min read

For a team trying to build chemistry early in a new season, the best experience is just lots of experience playing together against a variety of teams.

The Sedona Red Rock High School boys basketball team got all of that and more, winning three of its seven games at the third annual Red Rocks Hoops Classic at the SRRHS gymnasiums Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5 to 7.

The Scorpions won their opening game of the tournament Thursday against Lee Williams, 52-44, but lost to Payson later the same day, 76-59.

On Friday afternoon, the Winslow Bulldogs used their deep bench to come at the Scorpions in waves and trounce the hometown team, 94-31. But that evening, the Scorpions played a much closer game in losing to Payson again, 54-45.

“Most of the schools we play against are three to five times larger than we are,” said Scorpions head boys basketball coach Greg Strickling. “Obviously, with the Winslow loss, I felt we were better than that.”
