Sedona lifeguards toe the line at statewide competition1 min read

Sedona lifeguards competed in the Ultimate Lifeguard Challenge that ultimately tested their water safety skill levels.

Twelve local lifeguards participated in the 128-man statewide competition at the Kiwanis Recreation Center in Tempe on June 30. The competition was hosted by the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association’s Sports and Aquatics Branch.

John Beck, left, Jacob Decker, Catherine Polito, Tristan Decker and Evan Decker were the five medal winners of the Sedona teams at the Ultimate Lifeguard Challenge. Polito won silver in the women’s Active Victim event, Jacob Decker won bronze in the men’s Active Victim event and Beck, Jacob Decker, Tristan Decker and Evan Decker won bronze in the Rescue Tube Relay.The 12 Sedona lifeguards were split into two men’s teams and one women’s team.

Rachel Murdoch, Shirley Presentacion, Catherine Polito and Kylie Self made up the Princess Mermaids.

Jacob Decker, John Beck, Tristan Decker and Matt Hamilton competed as Prestige International.

Evan Decker, Chris Gibson, Alex Mayer and Jasper Herrick were team Showtime.

Each team had to compete in four individual events and a team relay, and an individual could not compete in more than one individual event. The swimmer earned points based on his or her placement.
