While the best of the best are battling it out on the tennis courts in London for the Wimbledon Championships, a local resort held its own Wimbledon-like tournament.

The first annual Whites and Woods Mixed Doubles Tennis Classic was held Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30, at Enchantment Resort. Players stepped back in time as they exchanged rallies with their wooden rackets, white tennis balls, and all white attire.

“I had the idea of having a Whites and Woods Tennis Tournament as a different theme from a traditional tennis tournament,” Tournament Director Claudette Laliberte said. “The thought of having this tournament during the Wimbledon Championships fit the theme. It is still traditional for all players at Wimbledon to wear all white attire.”

Players used wood rackets that have a smaller hitting surface than rackets used today.

“The use of wood rackets allowed for longer rallies and more strategy to be used during the matches. It was nice to see.” said Laliberte, who was dressed in a long flowing white skirt and long sleeve blouse reminiscent of the 1920s era. “These days with the rackets having larger hitting surfaces and made of different composite materials, the game has evolved into more of a power game.”
