Sedona City Council unanimously selected Cliff Hamilton to be its next vice mayor Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Hamilton fills the position left vacant last month by John Bradshaw.

Mayor Rob Adams nominated Hamilton, saying he has proven to him they could work together and get along.

He also said he had to have a good working relationship with the vice mayor, something he does not have with Councilwoman Nancy Scagnelli, nominated by Councilwoman Pud Colquitt.

Before voting for Hamilton, council discussed the role of the vice mayor, and the most important one is filling in for the mayor when he is absent.

Adams said the position requires the person to work 20 to 30 hours a week and assume many of the same duties the mayor does.

The mayor said he has been overworked and needed someone to take the workload off of

him, and added he was being a little selfish in wanting this.

He said the relationship and respect he has for Hamilton cannot be overlooked.

Adams said Hamilton shows up for events, unlike most other council members. He knows some cannot attend events due to family and work obligations.

Hamilton said he would accept the position as long as other council members did not see it as a political ploy.

He also told them he would be council’s vice mayor, not Adams’ vice mayor.

Colquitt nominated Scagnelli, saying she deserved it because she has the most seniority on council.

Scagnelli said she had no problem working with Adams, but added the mayor does not share the same views.

She also said being vice mayor is not too important to her.

Council will soon have another member. Helen Knoll, Jerry Frey and Mike Ward will be interviewed by council Friday,

Dec. 4.

Assistant City Manager Alison Zelms said it is likely council will make its decision on the same day. Questions for the candidates must be submitted to the city clerk, and several council members wanted to tweak the questions from the past since there are candidates who have gone through this process before.
