Steve Pierce, a Republican from Prescott who claimed conservative credentials to oust incumbent Tom O'Halleran of Sedona, defeated his Democratic challenger to take the Senate District 1 seat in the Arizona legislature, according to unofficial results reported by the Arizona Secretary of State.

Incumbent Rep. Lucy Mason [R-Prescott] and Rep. Andy Tobin [R-Paulden] retained their seats in a Republican sweep of the local legislative contingent, the state reported.

With 95 percent of the votes counted in Yavapai and Coconino counties, Pierce won 51,058 votes compared to 32,471 votes for his Democratic challenger, Pat Chancerelle, according to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office.

Mason won the most votes in the Legislative District 1 race claiming 48,863 votes, followed by Andy Tobin, who won 46,109, the county reported.

Democrat Dennis Grittner, who won a write-in campaign during the Democratic primary to claim a spot on the ballot, ran a shoestring race in the general election using campaign funds provided by the state, but finished last with 31,722 votes.

All tallies are unofficial until certified.
