The Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III swimming and diving state meet is less than two weeks away, and a handful of Sedona Red Rock High School swimmers are in the picture — for now.

Unlike Divisions I and II, which have certain time standards for qualification, in Division III just the top 24 individuals and top 16 relay teams from each event get the nod.

Senior swimmer Charlie Parrella dives into the pool for a relay during the Heisley/Estes Cup, the annual meet between Sedona Red Rock High School and Mingus Union High School, on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The Scorpions’ last chance to book their ticket to Phoenix Country Day School’s Dady Aquatic Center, site of all three divisions’ state championship meets, came at the Small Schools Championship on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The team took sixth overall with a combined score of 210 points; the girls racked up 136 while the boys finished with 74.

It was also the final meet of the season for the majority of the Red Rock swimmers.

Senior Winston Cox took 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 24.81, and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.14. Both are respectable times for a first-year swimmer.

Sophomore Michael Lagorio also broke the one-minute barrier in the 100 freestyle, going 59.80. Senior Charlie Parrella [26.08] edged Lagorio out [26.16] in the 50 freestyle.

Freshman Dezra Dana took 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:18.75, while senior Parker Reed was 12th in the 200-yard individual medley [2:11.14].

Many of the team’s top swimmers, a lot of whom are currently set to compete at state, had top-10 finishes.
Eight of the team’s state qualifying times were made at the meet, also held at Dady Aquatic Center.

Other Division III schools, like cross-valley rival Mingus Union High School, have one more chance to qualify on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Narrowly missing out for the boys was senior Guilherme Garcia in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing 25th in the state rankings with a time of 1:13.60 at the Small Schools meet.
