Football

Sedona Red Rock High School fell to Central Region rival Kingman Academy High School 56-28 at home on Friday, Sept. 22.

The Scorpions [0-5, 0-2] returned home two weeks after its 69-57, double overtime loss to Holbrook High School. As did senior quarterback Javi Pacheco, who suffered an ankle injury against the Roadrunners. Pacheco was originally thought to be out for four weeks.

The hosts led 7-6 after the first quarter against one of the better offenses in the region, with the Tigers averaging 38 points per game.

Kingman Academy racked up 408 yards on the ground behind its big linemen. Junior running back Stevie Wusstig had 183 of those yards on 13 carries plus a pair of scores.

Tigers senior quarterback Kekoa Makaiwi-Stroup was nine for 17 with 162 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Red Rock has its toughest game of the season on Friday, Sept. 29, when it hosts Phoenix Christian High School, Conference 2A’s top team. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Cross Country

Senior Nathan Hoyer won the 5,000-meter open race at the Shane Morris Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23, in Lakeside. Hoyer, despite adding time from the prior time out at the Four Corners Invitational a week before, ran a 18:48.47 to help lead the team to a fourth-place overall finish with 106 points.

Sophomore Forrest Hartley came in ninth [20:14.01], senior Eduardo Jimenez was 26th [21:24.16] and junior Marino Lezcano came in just behind in 28th [21:31.23].

Senior Dylan Martinez finished in 23:14.57 and freshman Cisco Bekele in 24:24.51.

An all-underclassmen lineup ran on the girls side. Freshman Serena Allen was the top finisher in 17th place, crossing the finish line in 25:15.70. Fellow ninth-grader Zoe Schibler was 21st [26:08.26] while sophomores Cheyenne Javey [29:12.39] and Krushi Bhakta [31:11.35] rounded things out. No team score was available.

The Scorpions are halfway through their competition schedule for the season, but the next one was tabbed as first-year head coach Wyatt Stevenson’s favorite.

The 11th annual Desert Twilight Cross Country Meet is a nighttime race held in Casa Grande that attracts over 100 high school teams.

“It’s a really special race. I’m especially excited for the newcomers,” Stevenson said.
Scorpions senior middle blocker Chenoa Crans bumps the ball against Chino Valley High School during the team’s only home match to date on Aug. 29. The team returns home at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in a Central Region matchup with Mingus Mountain Academy.
Volleyball

The team traveled to Chino Valley High School for a second edition of its first match of the season back on Aug. 29, ending with another 3-0 victory for Red Rock.

The No. 11-ranked Scorpions won 25-14, 25-13, 25-17. Despite another sweep of the Cougars, co-head coach Danni Barker was concerned about the team’s attitude on the court.

“We won pretty easily but we’re still playing too casual,” Barker said.

They opened Central Region play at Paradise Honors High School on Tuesday, Sept. 26; results were unavailable at
press time.

Heading into that match, Barker knew it would be difficult. The Panthers lost to Anthem Preparatory Academy in four sets — the same opponent that swept the Scorpions on Sept. 19.

“I’m expecting a really tough match .... We watched Paradise Honors at the Estrella tournament, they’re a sound defensive team that will frustrate our hitters,” Barker said.

After 30 days away from Doc Adams Gymnasium, Red Rock will take its home floor for the second time in 2017 when it hosts Mingus Mountain Academy at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in another region match.

But it will hit the road once again on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, traveling south to the Chandler Prep Volleyball Invitational at Chandler Preparatory Academy.

Swimming

The swim team takes the pool once again at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at home against Bourgade Catholic High School.

Its first state-qualifying meet of the season is Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Saturday Night Fever Invitational hosted by Chandler High School.
