The new club swimming season is underway, and one local team is off to a good start.
The Verde Valley High Performance swim team competed at the Welcome to Fall meet at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix, turning in a good performance.
Twelve-year-olds Carlos Lattanzi and Renae Porteous were the team’s two swimmers.
Lattanzi racked up five first-place swims, two second places and one third place.
Porteous raced to six first-place finishes and was runner-up twice.
More than the top places, each dropped significant time in a handful events, highlighted by Porteous’ seven-second drop in the 100 butterfly and six-second decrease in the 100 backstroke. Lattanzi broke the 1:00 barrier in the 100 freestyle, getting down to 57 seconds.
The meet was the first of the new short course season, meaning that swimmers raced in a 25-yard-long pool. Long course races are held in 25-meter-long pools.
The team returned to practice on Aug. 15, and had already begun to train off of their former best times three weeks later.
Their next meet is the October Invite, also at Moon Valley Country Club, on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
