A pair of Sedona Red Rock High School track and field athletes competed at the 64th annual Arizona Interscholastic Association Meet of Champions on May 11 at Brophy College Preparatory’s Sports Complex.
Seniors Joe Glomski and Hannah Ringel were the Scorpions representatives; both won Division IV state titles at the AIA State Championships on May 5 and 6. Glomski won both the triple jump and long jump, while Ringel won the shot put for a third consecutive season. Ringel was also runner up in the discus at the state meet.
Glomski was edged out of taking home the crown in both events at the Meet of Champions by a total of 7 1/2 inches. In the long jump, he reached a personal best of 23-10, but Tolleson Union High School senior Trey Johnson, this season’s Division I champion, leaped 24-1.50.
In the triple jump, Glomski jumped 45-07, a full foot further than at the state meet, but fell to Prescott High School senior Paxton Henry. Henry saved the best for last, blowing away his Division III state mark of 44-09.50 with a personal best of 45-11 in the Meet of Champions.
Glomski’s best mark of the season in triple jump was a 47-04, set at the Cardinal Invitational on April 14.
At the state level, Glomski’s Meet of Champions mark in the long jump and Cardinal Invite distance in the triple landed him third overall in both events.
Ringel, a University of Idaho commit, finished fifth in the shot put as the only event in which she participated. Her throw of 38-08.50 was her second shortest of the season; her personal best was 41-06.50, achieved at the Cardinal Invitational on April 14.
Ringel too ranked amongst Arizona’s best in both shot put and discus. She finished second in the shot put to Mountain Pointe High School senior Kayleigh Conlon and was 10th in the discus.
