Brian Bergner Jr. is in his fifth year working for Larson Newspapers as the sports reporter for the Sedona Red Rock News, The Camp Verde Journal and the Cottonwood Journal Extra.
Bergner currently covers all local sports in the Verde Valley for high schools, middle schools and local sporting events. He also is in charge of updating sports on the newspaper website.
Bergner, along with Production Manager John Stabe, received an award for Best Feature Photo Layout in the Arizona Newspapers Association 2010 Better Newspaper Contest for their Scorpions Football Preview page. Bergner recieved another award from the ANA in 2011 for his monthly column, From The Cheap Seats. His column, "AIA changes benefit AIA, but students suffer," ran in the Nov. 3, 2010, issue of the Sedona Red Rock News, and won Best Sports Column in the 2011 ANA Better Newspaper Contest.
Bergner was hired in April 2007 by Larson Newspapers after graduating with a bachelor of science in Journalism and a public relations minor in December 2006 from Northern Arizona University.
At NAU, Bergner was a student assistant media relations director under the tutelage of current Assistant Athletic Director and Media Relations Director Steve Shaff between August 2004 and December 2006. Bergner assisted in the everyday aspects of a sports information office including media guide composition, website management, computer statistics and archiving for football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field and golf.
Before attending NAU, Bergner committed to Concordia University Wisconsin after receiving a basketball scholarship to play for the Falcons under Head Coach Pete Gnan in the fall of 2001. Bergner attended CUW from August 2001 until May 2004, but played only one year of college basketball during the 2001-2002 season due to injuries. After hanging his shoes up, Bergner joined the Concordia women's basketball program as a student assistant coach under then Head Coach Chuck Oliver from September 2002 until May 2004. Bergner also worked as the assistant sports information director at CUW under Rick Reihl during that time.
In high school, Bergner was a three-year varsity letter winner in basketball and a two-year varsity letter winner in football for Sedona Red Rock High School before graduating in May 2001. In his junior season, Bergner helped lead the Scorpion basketball team to a 27-3 record during the 1999-2000 campaign when Sedona made it to the state semifinals at America West Arena, which is currently called United Airlines Arena in Phoenix.
After transferring to NAU in the fall of 2004, Bergner took the girls basketball assistant coach position for the Scorpions. After two seasons, Bergner joined the boys basketball program as a junior varsity coach and varsity assistant before being named head boys basketball coach for Sedona in April 2010, a position he currently holds. |
