If the Sedona-Oak Creek School District gives its approval to
Principal David Lykins’ proposal to charge students $100 to play a
sport at Sedona Red Rock High School, they wouldn’t be the only school
in the Verde Valley to have taken this step to help fund their
extra-curricular programs.
Mark Showers, dean of students and athletic director at Camp Verde
High School, already charges $25 per student if a student wants to play
a sport during the academic school year, but said that’s about as far
as it goes.
A majority of Village of Oak Creek residents must be happy — 54 percent of them at least.
On April 10, the Special Improvement District Steering Committee
received word from the Yavapai County Assessor’s Office verifying that
they had received a majority of signed petitions.
Of the approximately 4,100 Village property owners, at least 51
percent were needed to sign a petition in favor of maintaining
enhancements along Hwy. 179. So far, 54 percent have signed.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that
maintenance crews will be working for the next three weeks throughout
Oak Creek Canyon, picking up rocks, trees and other debris that fell
onto the shoulders of the roadway during the past winter’s storms.
Work will take place on Hwy. 89A between mile posts 375 and
390 from the Sedona city limits to the top of the switchbacks from
Monday, April 28, through Thursday, May 15.
Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather,
equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate
construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur.
Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known
in advance.
