Hiker airlifted from Boynton Canyon

Sedona Fire District emergency crews responded to a report of a fallen hiker at the end of Boynton Canyon Trail at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.

According to Gary Johnson, public information officer for the district, crews hiked to the patient, finding a female with an isolated ankle injury.

Firefighters on the scene determined that it could take as much as two and a half hours to carry the patient out.

As a result, the Arizona Department of Public Safety was called in to assist with extracting the patient.

Using a one skid operation, the patient was loaded onto the helicopter and transported to a landing zone at the trailhead parking lot.

The patient was transported to the Sedona campus of Verde Valley Medical Center by SFD ground ambulance.

Eight firefighters were committed to the call which took over three hours to complete.
