Friday, May 20, marks Rabbi Alicia Magal’s 10th year as head of the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley.

“The very first time I entered the beautiful synagogue in Sedona back in 2005 when I was applying for the position of rabbi,” Magal said on May 5, Holocaust Remembrance Day. “And then, when I met the congregates, I felt instantly at home. I felt that I already knew the people. I only had to find out their names and get to know their individual stories.”

When it comes to fires or medical emergencies, firefighters are often the first ones on the scene. But few may know that they are also there in a variety of ways after the smoke has cleared.

She began acting 30 years ago and appeared in guest spots on several television shows including “Cheers,” “21 Jump Street,” “Matlock” and “Touched By an Angel.” But she’s best known for playing Carol, Ross Geller’s ex-wife on “Friends.”

On the night spanning June 15 and 16, 1966, a small U.S. Marine Corps reconnaissance platoon engaged People’s Army of Vietnam and Viet Cong fighters, inflicting large casualties over the course of 12 hours before withdrawing with only a few dead.

He spoke for just a short time but what he had to say brought an appreciative crowd of nearly 200 to their feet for more than a minute.

Retired U.S. Air Force pilot Col. Thomas Kirk spoke for just 10 minutes but in that time he told of the horrors of being a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Kirk was the keynote speaker during a Vietnam veterans-only luncheon on Friday, April 1, at the Elks Lodge, part of the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day celebration.
