Seven years after Yavapai College Verde Campus offered its first viticulture class, the Southwest Wine Center has opened the doors of its tasting room.

The space is small and minimalist, high-ceilinged and airy. Its walls are ribbed with bands of oak taken from discarded wine barrels Director of Enology Michael Pierce dismantled himself with the help of students and staff.

Penny Wills began her tenure as president of Yavapai College on Aug. 1, 2011, with a beginning salary of $220,000 — a notable increase from her pay as president of Northeast Iowa Community College, significantly above the national average for community college presidents.

Less than two years ago, Camp Verde’s Chase Bank was targeted for robbery. On Thursday, Jan. 14, an opportunistic individual once again set his sights on the branch.

The suspect, described as a white male, early-to-mid 20s with dark hair, approximately 5 feet 10 inches and 120 pounds, entered the bank wearing a black zip-up jacket with a hood, black sunglasses, a black mask over his lower face, white gloves, light-colored pants and black tennis shoes.

According to Sedona-Oak Creek School District Superintendent David Lykins, 2016 may be the beginning of the end for Sedona Red Rock High School’s Career and Technical Education programs.

By extension, it could mean the end for the Valley Academy for Career and Technology Education, affecting students at Mingus Union High School and Camp Verde High School.

This fall, Yavapai College will make a change to its dual enrollment offerings and begin charging high school juniors and seniors $10 for every credit hour in which they are enrolled — a move that will result in a $30 fee for the most common dual enrollment classes.

Long before he became vice president of the Verde Valley Cyber Connection — formerly known as the Verde Valley Computer Club — Dave Olson was first exposed to computers while working at a utility company in Nebraska, creating land maps and then inputting equipment locations.

According to St. Joseph Catholic School Principal Greg Kirkham, nearly 15 percent of his school’s students come from Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek.

The statistic reveals a proportionate increase. Seven years ago, when Kirkham took on the role of principal, St. Joseph boasted 54 students, only four or five of which resided in Sedona — approximately 7 to 10 percent of the total student body. This school year, St. Joseph had 170 students, 24 of whom are bused in from Sedona.

“I think the Verde Valley is getting shafted,” Yavapai College District Governing Board member Deb McCasland said of the announcement to hire Kelly Trainor as the new associate dean of Yavapai College Verde Valley Campus.
