With the last of its four community forums wrapped up, Sedona-Oak Creek School District’s strategic planning committee now puts its collective nose to the grindstone to start putting together the outline for the strategic plan.
The committee now enters an analysis phase, when it begins compiling and studying the data it’s received. During its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Sedona Red Rock High School, the committee reviewed the process for this phase and broke out into three subteams to discuss their work further.
Each of these teams is tackling a separate issue:
- One examines the stakeholder input collected at the community forums held over the past month.
- Another studies demographic and economic data from within the district as well as from districts around the Verde Valley.
- The third delves into educational future forecasting as researched by KnowledgeWorks, which, as it sounds, predicts how educational systems may change in the future.
Before the subteams met, though, the committee as a whole discussed how to proceed with conducting an online stakeholder survey to gather more community input for the strategic plan.
Several on the committee suggested conducting a survey to allow those who were not able to attend the community forums to still voice their opinion.
The committee decided to use a set of surveys from AdvancED, an accrediting organization, to garner feedback from students, parents and community stakeholders.
Parents will be emailed the survey, but for stakeholders and community members who don’t have students in Sedona schools, a link to the survey will be posted on the district’s website at sedonak12.org. It will go live Jan. 8 and close Jan. 19.
The committee is preparing to present an outline of the strategic plan to the SOCSD Governing Board in early February, in time for the board to use the plan as it screens candidates for the superintendent position later that month.
To that end, committee members will review the data for their respective topic over the holiday and reconvene as teams in January to discuss their findings. The community input team will hold a work session Monday, Jan. 8, at 4 p.m. at the school district office on Brewer Road.
The educational future forecast team will hold a work session Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m., also at the district office.
