On Saturday, March 5, the Sedona Main Street Program does its job again bringing our community together with the 41st annual St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival.

Leading the charge is Arianna Throne, whom our feature writer, Lu Stitt, discovered after receiving a tip regarding Thorne’s designation as a top qualifier for the U.S. Western Region Irish dance competition. She will compete in the World Irish Dance Championships in Dublin in April.

Thorne will be accompanied at the parade by local businesses, service groups and volunteers all vested in making the community event the best it can be.

The first parade, held March 17, 1970, established a tradition the Sedona Main Street Program, with the help of students from the Northern Arizona University and the Green Team, has taken on to ensure the spirit of community stays alive.

The parade is just one of many events the Sedona Main Street Program is responsible for.

It lights the Uptown tree in December, provides safe and free trick-or-treating for children on Halloween, coordinates National Day of the Cowboy festivities and sponsors Moonlight Madness over Labor Day weekend, among other efforts.

Holly Epright and Ann DiBattista, the heart and soul of the Sedona Main Street Program, have found a way to integrate business and residents into community events making them beneficial for all.

With the help of their board, comprised largely of business owners and operators volunteering their time, Epright and DiBattista have found a way to provide free entertainment to the community while promoting Sedona’s businesses.

Most major community events, which benefit everyone involved, can be attributed to the work of program.

The burden of organizing and hosting community events is lifted from city staff, particularly in the parks and recreation department — although they too are responsible for some Sedona get-togethers.

The quality of life for residents improves. Promoting community and providing a place for neighbors to mingle in a festive, stress-free atmosphere strengthens the spirit of the city.

Businesses receive exposure by sponsoring, promoting and participating in activities for locals, which in turn reminds residents of the shopping and dining experiences available in their own community.

At the end of the day, it’s a good time for all.

Join the party Saturday at 10:30 a.m. as the parade begins to make its way down Jordan Road.
