Flagstaff Arts Council will present Introduction to Improvisational Comedy with Garrison Garcia, taking place in weekly sessions on Tuesdays between Aug. 30 and Oct. 4. The workshop will be held at the Coconino Center for the Arts from 6 to 8 p.m., culminating with a performance on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.

The workshop is designed for a wide range of experience and comfort levels, from beginners with no practical theater experience to advanced thespians seeking a challenge. During the first two sessions, the workshop will cover the basics of listening, agreement and teamwork through the introduction of short-form games. In successive sessions, students will focus on the exploration of characters, environments and organic openings. The last two weeks will teach long-form principles and prepare students for the stage.

Garcia has been performing with Northern Arizona University’s improv group, NAUghty Bits. He is the founder and director of Flagstaff Foundry, a monthly community variety show hosted at The Circus Arts Studio, and he’s the founding member of Tiny Punches, the Circus Arts Studio house improv team. He said he firmly believes that anyone can do improv, and enjoys working with first timers as much as seasoned pros.
