Verde Valley Voices offers spring concert on May 121 min read

The Spring Concert of the Verde Valley Voices will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Bringing music of love, this isn’t an afternoon of flowery love songs, but relationships explored from friendship to love to breakups and everything in between.

“Most of our music is songs you know, like Billy Joel’s ‘For the Longest Time’ and Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love,’” Joy Simons, who leads the group, said. “We’ve got Irish songs, French music, Broadway and something new. We’ve been enjoying learning it all and now we’re going to enjoy singing it for you.”

The Voices is a non-audition choir of about 80 singers. They practice on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. “Although we are not a church choir, we are able to practice in the place where we sing our concerts,” Trish Wood, president of the organization, said. “It’s fun to sing in such a big room and Immaculate Conception is very gracious to us. This season we added a school assembly for more than 700 students from across the Verde Valley. It was great to sing for the children.”

The doors open at 2:30 p.m. to the music of River Winds, members of the Cottonwood Community Band. That will be followed by the traditional audience sing-a-long led by Neil Manzenberger. The Voices’ concert will begin at 3 p.m.

“You’re sure to have a good time,” Simons said. “Our hard work pays off for you.”
