After a solid 2010 season that saw the West Sedona School volleyball team go 10-6 overall and finish third in the Verde Valley Athletic Association Championships, the Wildcats are looking for more in 2011.
“We only have two returners this season, and the rest either played ‘B’ ball last year or didn’t play at all,” Fagan said. The two returning eighth graders for West Sedona include Kierya Shelley and Jasmine Geurts, both of whom should start for the Wildcats this fall. Top newcomers for West Sedona this season include eighth-graders Lauren Stevenson, Itzel Perez-Pagaza, Rachael Jennings and Sydnew Hauer. Others making the team looking to crack the starting rotation include eighth-graders Regan Hurkett, Lezah Richardson, Karen Giorgiani and Rebel Turner. The Wildcats began the 2011 season with a big victory over crosstown rival Big Park Community School on Aug. 25, winning 2-1. Big Park defeated West Sedona three times in 2010, making it extra sweet for Fagan and her Wildcats to open the season with a win against a team that utterly dominated West Sedona last year. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, West Sedona improved its record to 2-0 this season with a 2-1 victory over cross-valley rival Camp Verde Middle School.
The Wildcats lost game one, 25-22, but rebounded to win the next two games, 25-21 and 15-6. As for expectations this season, Fagan isn’t holding back a team she believes can go all the way. “My expectations this year are to get better, and learn the game of volleyball to get them ready for high school. I think our goal should be to win the division this year,” Fagan said confidently. By division, she means the VVAA Championships in October. West Sedona and Big Park are expected to be at the top of the list once again for teams within the small schools region. “I think this team is great, and we can go far,” Fagan said. The Wildcats were in action again Thursday, Sept. 1, as they played host to Beaver Creek School. Results were unavailable at press time. Next up, West Sedona is scheduled to travel to Oak Creek School on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Official start time is set for 6 p.m. |

Second-year West Sedona Head Coach Erin Fagan did quite well in her rookie season as coach, but she’ll have to do an even better job this fall having lost most of her team to graduation.
