Print Wildcats improve to 7-0 with 2-1 win over Camp Verde

The West Sedona School volleyball team kept its record perfect Tuesday, Sept. 20, with a 2-1 win over visiting rival Camp Verde Middle School.

The West Sedona School volleyball team has started the season a perfect 7-0 after a 2-1 win over Camp Verde Middle School on Tuesday, Sept. 20.Camp Verde came to town looking to steal a victory, but second-year Head Coach Erin Fagan and her Wildcats wouldn’t allow it, improving their 2011 record to a perfect 7-0.

“We started slow, but the girls came back and they came together in time,” Fagan said. “These girls have good relationships with each other, and we’re beginning to come together as a team.”

The Cowboys were solid in game one, claiming a 25-15 win to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series at West Sedona on Tuesday.

West Sedona fought back in game two, squeaking by a Camp Verde team trying to find out where its focus wandered off to, 25-23.

In game three, the Wildcats took the rubber match, 15-11, thus taking the best-of-three series, 2-1.

Top performances for West Sedona against the Cowboys on Tuesday included eighth-grader Rachael Jennings, who had one kill, while eighth-grader Itzel Perez-Pagaza had one assist and one ace serve. Eighth-grader Lauren Stevenson recorded two aces in the 2-1 victory.

It is the fourth match this season for the Wildcats that has gone all three games.

Rival Big Park Community School, Clarkdale-Jerome School and the Cowboys are the only teams to force the Wildcats to play all three games. Camp Verde lost to the Wildcats on Aug. 30, 2-1.

West Sedona swept Beaver Creek, Oak Creek and Pine-Strawberry schools, 2-0.

Next up, West Sedona will travel to Beaver Creek on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The Wildcats were originally scheduled to play Big Park on Thursday, Sept. 22, but the match has been rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13.

The match against Beaver Creek on Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

West Sedona will return home Thursday, Sept. 29, when it plays host to Oak Creek starting at 5 p.m.
