The Wildcat boys basketball team wrapped up the 2011-2012 regular season schedule Thursday, Jan. 19, with a 34-23 victory over rival Big Park Community School.

Neil Smith, No. 3, tries to dribble through the defense Thursday, Jan. 19, when the Big Park Community School boys basketball team hosted rival West Sedona School. The Wildcats played well enough to win, defeating Big Park 34-23.With the win over Big Park, West Sedona School, which is 4-8 overall this season, more than likely captured the No. 4 or No. 5 seed heading into the Verde Valley Athletic Association Small Schools Tournament.

The VVAA Small Schools Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, at Clarkdale-Jerome School.

“I think we have a chance to do well in the tournament. Against Big Park, we focused on the defensive side of the basketball and I think the kids did well with it,” West Sedona Head Coach Pedro Ortega Sr. said.

On Thursday, West Sedona outscored the Coyotes 13-10 in the first period, and led 18-14 going in to the locker room at halftime.

Up 24-18 after three quarters, the Wildcats went on a 10-5 run in the fourth to seal the victory.

Seventh-grader Dawson Stevenson led the charge for the Wildcats, scoring 12 points by hitting four three-point baskets from beyond the arc.

“He was feeling it, I guess,” Ortega said with a smile.

Stevenson added three assists with his game-high score while eighth-grader Bailey Ehrlich had eight points and four rebounds.

Other standouts for West Sedona included eighth-grader Wyatt Stevenson, with six points and two rebounds, eighth-grader Alex Kanning, with four points and five rebounds and sixth-grader Michael Ortega, with four points and five assists.

For Big Park, which is 0-10 this season, seventh-grader Chas Rescigno had nine points while eighth-grader Austin Samano had five points.

“We stayed with West Sedona in the first half, but after that it seemed there was a lid put over the top of the rim. Nothing would fall in for us,” Big Park Head Coach Julie Hallenbeck said.

Big Park will be the No. 7 seed at this weekend’s Small Schools Tournament in Clarkdale, but according to Ortega, the brackets have yet to be released.

“We won’t know for sure what the schedule is or what seed we are until Wednesday more than likely,” Ortega said.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the VVAA athletic directors are scheduled to meet and set the tournament bracket.
