The boys basketball team at West Sedona School hosted the rival Coyotes on Tuesday, Jan. 3, coming away with a 29-23 victory to improve to 3-5 overall this season.
West Sedona took a 14-3 lead on the Coyotes to end the first period, but Big Park outscored the Wildcats 20-15 the rest of the way. “We played a very hard-fought game against West Sedona. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get the win,” Big Park Head Coach Julie Hallenbeck said. Big Park’s Chas Rescigno, a seventh-grader, led the Coyotes with nine points while eighth-grader Austin Samano and seventh-grader Randy Rodriguez each had five points. West Sedona eighth-grader Alex Kanning was too much for Big Park to handle inside, scoring a game-high 16 points while pulling 10 rebounds in the six-point victory for his Wildcats. Wildcats eighth-grader Bailey Ehrlich scored six points and had five rebounds while eighth-grader Wyatt Stevenson had four points and three steals. Seventh-grade guard Michael Ortega chipped in with three points. “It was a good effort by the kids for not having practiced all of last week because of break. We only had one practice, then played, and we did OK,” West Sedona Head Coach Pedro Ortega Sr. said. “It was a good win.” The 0-6 Coyotes were in action again Thursday, Jan. 5, when they played host to Clarkdale-Jerome School. Results were unavailable at press time. Big Park is scheduled to host Camp Verde Middle School on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. As for West Sedona, the 3-5 Wildcats will play Clarkdale-Jerome on the road Jan. 10, with a tipoff time of 5 p.m. |

Big Park Community School, which entered Tuesday’s contest with an 0-5 record, gave the Wildcats all they could handle and more after the first quarter of play.
