The Sedona Red Rock High School volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday, Sept. 10, taking fourth overall at the Coconino Invitational Tournament in Flagstaff.

Senior Katie Furlong looks toward the bench for instructions from the coaching staff Thursday, Sept. 8, against Camp Verde High School. Furlong had a solid Coconino Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10.Sedona finished the tournament with a 6-2-1 overall record, eventually losing to Payson High School by the final score of 2-1 to take fourth.

“We’re doing some good stuff. We still have things to work on, however. I’m still trying to figure out our best combinations on the floor,” longtime Sedona Head Coach John Parks said.

Parks added his team this season has good depth, and is evenly talented, making it a little harder to figure out who is the best fit with who during matches.

At the Coconino Invitational Tournament, Sedona tied with Holbrook High School in the first match [1-1] but went on to beat Coconino, Northland Preparatory, Chinle and Chino Valley high schools, 2-0.

In tournaments like the Coconino Invitational, teams play matches that are a best-of-three series, instead of the best-of-five format like regular season play, according to Parks.

After pool play Saturday, Sedona was the No. 1 seed heading into bracket play, beating up on Northland Preparatory again, 2-0.

Sedona played Tuba City High School in round two, losing 2-1. The Scorpions were down 10-8 in game three before time ran out and Sedona had to move on.

The Scorpions had no trouble with Holbrook again, winning 2-0, but lost 2-1 to Payson to finish fourth overall. Sedona lost 11-10 in the third game to the Longhorns.

“Katie [Furlong] had an excellent tournament for us. All the girls played pretty well,” Parks said.

Next up, the Scorpions play host to Coconino on Thursday, Sept. 15. Official start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
