For the first time in six years, the Sedona Red Rock High School football team has won back-to-back games, defeating Greyhills Academy High School on Friday, Sept. 16, 40-8.
“Leaving no doubt in the games that you are supposed to win is a big step forward for any program, and our kids went out and responded well to that situation the past two weeks,” second-year Sedona Head Coach Rick Walsworth said.
“We told our kids that they were the better team, and they went out and played like it from the opening kickoff. That is a tough thing to do when you aren’t accustomed to being in that position,” he added.
Sedona had no trouble with its opponent for the second straight week. The Scorpions outscored the Fightin’ Knights 40-0 by halftime, and pulled their starters for backups.
In the first half, Sedona scored three touchdowns in each quarter, starting with senior Bradley Cox who had a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Scorpions up 7-0.
Cox had four carries for 66 yards and the score while senior quarterback Jack Johnson had eight carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Johnson completed three of five passes for 67 yards and two scores including a 33-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Chris Oestmann to begin the second quarter.
The touchdown throw made it 27-0 Sedona, and it was clear on both sidelines this game was over. Sedona had 240 yards of total offense, most of which came in the first half with the starters.
“The kids executed at a high level in all three phases of the game and we have done a good job of playing as a team,” Walsworth said.
Defensively, the Scorpions didn’t allow Greyhills to record a single first down the entire night and the kickoff team stopped the Fightin’ Knights inside the 20-yard line three times.
The last time Sedona won back-to-back contests was during the 2005 season when Jim Cromartie was head coach. The Scorpions defeated Estrella Foothills [34-20] and Parker [35-13] high schools for the seasons only two-game win streak. Sedona finished 4-6 in 2005.
Now in 2011, Sedona can move past the modest two-game win streak and look toward better things to come, according to Walsworth.
The Scorpions are 2-2 overall this season and are currently ranked No. 12 in the Division V Arizona Interscholastic Association power point polls, which were released Monday, Sept. 19.
Sedona’s next opponent is Camp Verde High School, which has started the 2011 campaign with a perfect 4-0 record, and is ranked No. 1 in Division V.
The game is scheduled to take place in Sedona on Friday, Sept. 23, and could be a Division V first-round state playoff preview for the Scorpions if they are to qualify in November.
Camp Verde has shown no signs of slowing down, having defeated Chino Valley High School on Friday, 55-38.
The Cowboys have already beaten Scottsdale Christian, Payson and Williams high schools this season.
Sedona hasn’t beaten the Cowboys since the 2005 season when Cromartie walked the sidelines, opening the schedule with a 33-19 win over its rival.
Since then, Camp Verde is a perfect 5-0 against Sedona, but Walsworth hopes that all changes this Friday night.
“My expectations are the same as they are every week, and that is we focus every day in practice on getting better as individuals which in turn makes us a better team,” Walsworth said. “We expect the kids to go out and compete Friday night with the same intensity and focus they have had the past two weeks.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
