The Red Rock Youth Football organization had two of its three teams qualify for the postseason this past weekend, making it the most successful year in the program’s history.

Head Coach Ruben Sandoval talks with a player about tackling during practice earlier this season. The Sedona Mighty Mites are scheduled to play the Chino Valley Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the Northern Arizona Youth Football League playoffs. The Sedona Majors Scorpions were able to escape with a win over the Cottonwood Packers on Saturday, Oct. 15, claiming a 26-12 victory to finish 4-4 overall this season.

Head Coach Sam Samano said the Scorpions needed to win in order to make the playoffs, and they did just that.

“I wasn’t sure we were going to make the playoffs, so the boys knew what they had to do,” Samano said.

After starting 1-3 this season, the Scorpions finished the season having won three of their last four games including big wins over the Flagstaff Raiders [29-26] on Sept. 24 and the Prescott Badgers [30-7] on Oct. 1.

The Scorpions are scheduled to play the Prescott Valley Brigade in the first round of the Northern Arizona Youth Football League playoffs Saturday, Oct. 29.

Prescott Valley is the No. 2 seed in the NAYFL West conference, while Sedona is No. 3 in the NAYFL East conference.

A two-week break will help many Scorpions players heal any injuries and rest their legs for a playoff push.

“We don’t know much about Prescott Valley, but we do know we scored 18 points on the best team in the league in Wickenburg when they couldn’t score a point,” Samano said.

The Scorpions lost 51-18 against the Wickenburg Wranglers on Oct. 8, who are a perfect 8-0 and are No. 1 in the NAYFL West conference. The 51-18 score didn’t tell the whole story as Sedona was down 14-12 after one quarter of play.

A kickoff time has yet to be announced for the game Oct. 29.

As for the Sedona Mighty Mites, the Stingers wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 33-6 loss to the Wickenburg Wranglers on Oct. 15.

It was the third straight loss for the Stingers, who were outscored 81-6 during the losing streak. The loss drops Sedona’s record to 2-5 overall this season, but the Stingers were still able to qualify for the playoffs.

Sedona is scheduled to play the No. 1 team out of the NAYFL West, the Chino Valley Cougars, on Saturday, Oct. 22.

“This may the first time all season we’ll have a full squad. We always play with nine or 10 guys and this time we’ll have 12. The boys are looking forward to the game this weekend,” Stingers Head Coach Ruben Sandoval said.

Kickoff is set for 10 a.m.

As for the Sedona Minors, the Venom didn’t qualify for the playoffs this season. After starting 3-1, the Venom dropped their last three games of the season including a 28-6 loss to the Cottonwood Bears on Oct. 15.

The loss put Sedona at 3-4 overall this year and just out of the NAYFL postseason.
