Print Sedona opens pool in style

The Sedona Red Rock High School swimming team opened its new home in style Thursday, Sept. 1, with the boys and girls claiming victory in their first meet of the 2011 season.

Katie Millar, Mara Leake and Olivia Luyckx were on the team as well.“It was an incredible first meet,” second-year Sedona Head Coach A. Jay Bronson said. “I’m so happy to see the new pool in use with so many student athletes.”

For the boys, the Scorpions doubled up visiting Canyon State Academy for first place overall with 200 total points. Canyon State was second with 98. Wickenburg High School took third with 72 while Phoenix Christian High School came in fourth with 35.

As for the girls, Sedona had no troubles with Wickenburg or Phoenix Christian, taking first overall with 185 points. Wickenburg had 136, which was good enough for second place while Phoenix Christian was third with 91.

Sedona was impressive Thursday, claiming a gold medal in 10 of the 22 events.

The Decker brothers were dominant once again, with freshman Tristan Decker claiming first overall in the 50-yard freestyle event with a 24.22 time.

Decker was first in the 100-yard backstroke event as well with a 1:09.28 time while his older brother Jacob Decker, a junior, finished first overall in the 100-yard butterfly event with a 1:03.47 time.

Other top performances included senior Olivia Luyckx who finished first overall in the 50-yard freestyle event with a 27.13 time while senior teammate Alyssa Millar was first in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:19.13 time.

The Scorpions were outstanding in the relay events as well, with Sedona taking first overall in the 200-yard medley relay event with a 1:53.32 time. Tristan and Jacob Decker, along with junior Colin Hurkett and freshman Chris Gibson were responsible for the victory.

The Scorpions were in action Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Bourgade Catholic High School.

Results were unavailable at press time.

Next up, Sedona is scheduled to participate in the Mingus Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 8. The meet is set to be held at the Cottonwood Community Pool with a start time of 4 p.m.
