More than likely, the Artichoke Invitational at Scottsdale Community College on Saturday, Sept. 17, won’t be noted as a memorable meet for anyone who follows the Scorpions. That’s too bad. The girls cross-country team at Sedona Red Rock High School finished eighth overall with 261 points Saturday. Not exactly worth putting in the scrap book ... right? Wrong.
Sedona, which was by far the smallest program out of 29 in attendance Saturday in Scottsdale, finished ahead of big name schools like Buena [11th], Trevor G. Browne [12th], Hamilton [13th] and Mesa [14th] high schools. Or, let’s just put it this way, Buena [2,222], Trevor G. Brown [2,808], Hamilton [3,431] and Mesa [3,334] each have one thing in common: They are big. Those are the enrollment numbers for the respective schools, each of which are Division I programs, not Division IV like the Scorpions who tally in at 489 students. How about the invitational’s winner, Mountain View Mesa High School, which took first overall Saturday as a team with 31 points. It has 3,369 students. For Sedona, the girls took eighth and were led by none other than junior Mykala Seresun, who finished fourth overall with an 18:25 time. It was Sedona’s only top 10 finish. Junior Eva Wilson took 19th overall with a 19:49.90 time while sophomore Tatiana Chionis was 56th overall with a 20:58.50. Junior Taylor Gage was also in the mix, finishing 60th overall with a 21:10.10 time. For the boys, Sedona finished 18th overall with 474 points. Like the girls, Mountain View Mesa won the event, taking gold with 55 total points. The Scorpions didn’t have anyone in the top 50, but sophomore Travis Okie finished 61st overall with a 17:13.40 time. Senior Brandon Snickers was 67th with a 17:22.80 time, and senior Gabe Greenfield was 99th out of 205 with an 18:02.30. Next up for Sedona, the Scorpions will travel to Pinetop-Lakeside to participate in the Blue Ridge Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24. |
