Sedona loses to Fountain Hills in Wolves Classic title match

The Sedona Red Rock High School volleyball team took second overall at the Wolves Classic Invitational this past weekend in Goodyear, losing in the championship match to Fountain Hills High School, 2-1.

“Everything came together, and the girls played very well,” longtime Sedona Head Coach John Parks said.

Sedona took game one of the tournament championship match Saturday, Sept. 17, 25-9, but faltered against the Falcons in games two and three, 27-25 and 17-15.

In the semifinals, Sedona and 2A conference defending state champion Northwest Christian High School were paired.

The Scorpions lost game one to the Crusaders, 25-10, but then caught fire, winning game two 25-14 and taking the best of three series in game three, 15-6.

“For whatever reason, we just got hot. And that carried over into the championship,” Parks said.

Sedona began the tournament Friday, Sept. 16, with three victories in pool play over Phoenix Country Day School, Sierra Linda and Estrella Foothills high schools, 2-0.

The Scorpions had no problems with Buckeye High School in the first round of bracket play Saturday, winning 25-11 both games for the sweep. The win over Buckeye punched Sedona’s ticket to the semifinals against Northwest Christian.

The second-place finish for Sedona in the Wolves Classic Invitational at Estrella Foothills gives way to the rest of the season and according to Parks, the Scorpions are set up to do well.

“With how well we played this weekend, I think we’re going to take off the rest of the season. We beat Northwest Christian, which is in our division, and the girls now realize they can beat the best,” Parks said.

Sedona traveled to Chino Valley High School on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next up, the Scorpions welcome Northland Preparatory Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 21, with a scheduled start time of 6 p.m.

Sedona is 5-1 [11-3-1, tournament play] overall this season and ranked No. 6 in the Division IV Arizona Interscholastic Association power point polls.
