The Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team ended a four-match losing streak Jan. 26 with an impressive 3-2 victory on the road over the Bears of Bradshaw Mountain High School.
The last time these two squads hooked up was at the beginning of the season Dec. 1, when the Scorpions came away with a 2-1 victory in overtime, needing penalty kicks [3-2] to get the win. On Jan. 26, junior Cassi Sanchez began the scoring for the Scorpions in the 15th minute of play with a goal to put Sedona up, 1-0. Sophomore Rachel Preshler followed suit in the 37th minute just before halftime, giving the Scorpions a 2-0 lead. Up 2-1 midway through the second half, Sedona team captain and senior Catrina Lee-Wilkins scored on a penalty kick, giving the Scorpions a commanding 3-1 lead and eventually a 3-2 victory. Sedona took 12 shots on goal against the Bears while junior goalkeeper Sierra Winters recorded 12 saves. With the win, Sedona wraps up the 2011-2012 campaign with a 4-9 overall record. The Scorpions were 2-8 in Arizona Interscholastic Association power point play this season, ranking them No. 42 out of 48 schools in Division III. “It was a tough schedule this year, and we did what we could, but we had a young squad this year,” Cadigan said. The Scorpions graduate only Lee-Wilkins in May, leaving several juniors to return in 2012-2013 including Winters, Sanchez, Meredith Woodford, Marissa Surber, Holly Drotsmann, Jordan Matthews and Jillian Bradshaw. |

“It was nice to get a win to end the season like that. Bradshaw Mountain is a tough team, and the girls played well,” fifth-year Sedona Head Coach Tom Cadigan said.
