The Sedona Red Rock High School swimming team had five top-10 finishes this past weekend at the Division II State Championships at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa.
The Scorpion boys finished eighth overall Saturday, Nov. 5, scoring 96 points and finishing in the top 10 as a team for the second straight season. There were 43 schools participating in the Division II State Championships over the weekend, making a top-10 finish for the boys quite impressive, according to Bronson. Salpointe Catholic High School ran away with the Division II title, scoring 400 points. Arcadia High School came in second with 314 points while Queen Creek High School was third with 157 points. If the Arizona Interscholastic Association still held a 1A-3A state championship meet for small schools, the Scorpions would be state champions as they were in 2009. No small school that used to swim within the 1A-3A framework until the changes happened in fall 2010 finished ahead of Sedona this past weekend. For the girls, Sedona did not have enough swimmers in the pool to place this past weekend, with Arcadia winning the 2011 state title by scoring 289 points. Top performances for the Scorpions included the boys’ 200-yard medley relay team, which finished eighth overall with a 1:49.69 time. Freshman Tristan Decker, and juniors Jacob Decker, Henrik Svensson and Mackena Koss were on the team. The same four teammates finished sixth overall in the 400-yard freestyle relay event with a 3:34.01 time. Tristan Decker also took 11th in the 100-yard freestyle event with a 1:06.55 time. In the 200-yard freestyle event, sophomore Colin Hurkett was eighth overall with a 2:00.62 time. Hurkett took eighth in the 500-yard freestyle swim as well, finishing with a 5:27.64 time. The 200-yard freestyle relay team for the Scorpions took ninth overall as Hurkett, Koss, and juniors Cody Chartier and Nick Morgan finished with a 1:38.61 time. |
