The Sedona Red Rock High School boys basketball team took a trip to Chino Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The boys brought a win home with a 61-50 victory against Chino Valley High School.

Senior Bradley Cox shoots the basketball over two Mingus Union High School defenders Jan. 20.“We got a great effort from our team top to bottom tonight,” Sedona Head Coach Brian Bergner Jr. said. We got into foul trouble in the first half and some other kids needed to step up off the bench. I’m proud of our boys for what they did at Chino Valley. They got down early and showed some character. It’s a good building block for the future for us.” Senior Bradley Cox had a great game with 22 points on 7 for 21 shooting including a 6 for 8 from the charity stripe. Cox had seven steals and six rebounds.

“It took awhile for me to get back into shape and get into the rotation and playing with all the guys, and now we’re playing like a team and winning some games and having a good time doing it. We’re really looking forward to playing Camp Verde for senior night and I want to beat them with a passion,” Cox said.

The boys were down 14-6 after the first quarter and were down 22-11 with 6:01 left on the clock in the first half.

After that mark, the Scorpions outscored Chino Valley 50-28. During the second half, Sedona outscored Chino Valley 40-24. The Scorpions shot 38 percent from the field as a team while only committing 12 turnovers but adding 18 steals and 20 assists.

Junior Stephen Sundberg had 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting with 11 rebounds.

“I know we haven’t won a lot of games this year. We’ve had some issues with a few injuries early in the season, and we had a few kids decide not to play with us, but the group we have now has started to figure some things out and come together. They are playing much better as a team these last few weeks,” Bergner said.

The team started the season 0-8 but since have gone 7-9 for a 7-17 overall record.

This Friday, Jan. 27, the Scorpions play Flagstaff High School at home with a start time of 7 p.m. Sedona hosts cross-valley rival Camp Verde High School on Saturday, Jan. 28, for senior night. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

Whitney Cooper, a senior at Sedona Red Rock High School, covers the Scorpion boys basketball team this season for the Sedona Red Rock News.
