For the first time in Sedona Red Rock High School history, a boys basketball tournament was held in Sedona. The inaugural Red Rock Hoops Classic brought in 12 teams from around Arizona to compete.

Sophomore T.J. Ryan goes hard to the rim Thursday, Dec. 1, at the inaugural Red Rock Hoops Classic at Sedona Red Rock High School. It began Thursday, Dec. 1, with the Scorpions playing Empire High School and losing 84-39. Junior Steven Sundberg scored 17 points during the Empire game.

With one game under the Scorpions’ belts they moved onto game two. However, Alchesay High School defeated Sedona 70-28. Sedona was down 19-14 in the second quarter with six minutes to go but could not pull through.

Day two began with the Scorpions playing St. Gregory College Preparatory. St. Gregory made it in to the semifinals during the 2010-2011 season so they were a tough team to beat.

Sedona stayed close with St. Gregory and played a great game, according to Sedona Head Coach Brian Bergner Jr. Sundberg scored 19 points while senior Ashor Samano scored nine points. The Scorpions lost 59-46.

With three losses behind them, the boys moved on to game No. 4 against Mingus Union High School. The boys had less enthusiasm resulting in a struggling first quarter falling behind 24-4. Senior Gabe Greenfield scored seven points. The final score was Mingus 58, Sedona 32.

The fifth and final game was close against Northland Preparatory Academy. Samano came out strong scoring 27 points.

“This tournament was a good learning experience especially for the younger guys. I think this season will turn around and bring us closer as a team,” Samano said.

The Scorpions were down 50-38 with four minutes remaining on the clock. Then with 57 seconds to go they were only one point behind making it 57-56. Sedona was unable to attain the lead, and the final score was 59-56.

“Right now, we are struggling. We are going through a tough stretch and have lots of adversity hitting us from every angle. The great thing about basketball is these boys will become a team sooner or later because of it, making it a family atmosphere. Once we reach that, good things will begin to happen,” Bergner said.

Whitney Cooper, a senior at Sedona Red Rock High School, will cover the Scorpion boys basketball team this season for the Sedona Red Rock News.
