The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team tried its best to pull off the upset Friday, Feb. 3, but the rival Cowboys were too much to handle in a 50-36 loss.

Sedona Girls Basketball players sit the bench during a game Jan. 11. The Scorpions lost to rival Camp Verde High School on Friday, Feb. 3, 50-36.“I was happy with our performance even though we lost. We had two of our better shooters in foul trouble most of the evening which hurt us,” second-year Sedona Head Coach Tina Hawes said.

Junior Sierra Hatler-Stefick and sophomore Amber Rippy each picked up their third personal fouls in the second quarter, and were hit with their fourth personal foul in the first minute of the third period.

The two starters for Sedona are crucial, and with them on the bench, Hawes and the Scorpions were a bit overmatched Friday.

“I thought the first half we did well, but then we fell apart in the second half,” junior Tiana Hatler-Stefick said.

After winning six straight, the Scorpions have lost three of their last four contests to end the 2011-2012 regular season schedule.

Sedona wraps up the regular season with a 16-10 overall record. The Scorpions finished No. 24 in the Division III Arizona Interscholastic Association power point poll, which was released Monday, Feb. 6.

The Scorpions were scheduled to begin the Section III [Division III] Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 7, as the No. 8 seed playing No. 1 Valley Christian High School.

The game took place at Valley Vista High School on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

If Sedona is able to beat Valley Christian, it would play the winner of the No. 4 Camp Verde-No. 5 Estrella Foothills High School game.

The Section III semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, at Valley Vista with a tipoff time of 6:15 p.m.

If the Scorpions lose to Valley Christian, the team would need to wait until the Section III Tournament is complete before finding out if they made the Division III State Tournament, which is a possibility.

The Division III State Tournament is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.
